I’m Brock

I don’t care to talk about myself too much - I prefer the focus stays on the landscapes I inhabit and the stories they have to tell. So much of my own story seamlessly intertwines with those told by the land. Its breaths, outbursts and movements dictate my own. Its beauty pushes and pulls me exactly where I need to be at any given moment. Its unpredictability humbles me and commands my respect. The power these wild spaces have over me is precisely what drives me to tell their stories, to instill those exact same feelings in others through my capturing of the land’s majesty.

Visual arts have been my creative outlet since my youth, when my younger brother and I would use our parents’ Canon Powershot to create stop motion videos with our Lego minifigures. Video and film remained my focus through my teenage years, culminating with the purchase of my first DSLR camera in late 2016 with the intent of using it exclusively for video. It didn’t take long for me to try my hand at taking some photos, though, and everything following that first click of the shutter is history.

Having spent my whole life in Washington to that point, I always had a certain affinity for the Cascade Mountains, but it wasn’t until beginning my photography journey that I began to dive into all they had to offer. Seeking out landscapes led me to seek grander, harder-to-reach landscapes, begetting longer and more difficult excursions into the mountains. The pursuit of landscapes naturally transitioned to a pursuit of unforgettable and challenging experiences within those landscapes I had come to hold dear, introducing me to the worlds of mountaineering, rock climbing, trail running, and most formatively, thru-hiking, each of these disciplines unlocking new ways to become one with the land.

I’m infinitely grateful for the landscapes I’ve traveled - in a way, I owe them everything. They’ve shaped my worldview more than any other influence while affording me opportunities and experiences previously unheard of.

My SUV is my house, but in a very real way the mountains are my home. I can only hope to honor their stories through my art in return.
